A main component of Spay Hampton Roads is the “Norfolk Pet Project”, a long-term program that provides free spay/neuter to targeted neighborhoods. This project was tested last summer in the Ocean View neighborhood, and in a span of 9 months, 21 clinics were held, and a total of 539 dogs and cats were spayed/neutered at no cost to their owners.
Since then, Animal Rescue of Tidewater obtained the Norfolk Police Department call history of requests for animal control officers. This data was sorted by neighborhood, and then merged with US Census Bureau information on neighborhood income levels. Based on the results, the neighborhoods of Oakdale Farms, Southern Shopping Center, Denby Park, Park Place, Kensington, and Lamberts Point/ODU were selected for the current free spay/neuter program.
The goal is to spay/neuter 450 dogs and cats from Oakdale Farms, Denby Park and Southern Shopping Center and spay/neuter 1200 dogs and cats from Park Place, Kensington, and Lamberts Point/ODU. If you are not in the target neighborhood, please take time to look into pricing of the low-cost spay/neuter clinics in the area.
How Do You Participate? It’s easy. As long as you can provide proof that you live in the target area (driver’s license or utility bill), you just need to make an appointment online (see link below) or by phone (757-456-1215). After submitting your information, you will receive a callback within 48 hours. We can only take reservations for 2 household pets at any one time, although additional pets can come the day of your appointment for acceptance on a standby basis if someone does not show up.
The surgeries are performed by a licensed veterinarian in a mobile spay/neuter clinic. You drop your pet/s off in the morning, and by mid-afternoon they are ready to go home with you. You will receive instructions on follow-up care, and although the animals are undergoing a surgery, recovery is typically very rapid.
What if My Pets Need Other Veterinary Services? The Norfolk Pet Project will cover the costs to have resident pets spayed or neutered. However, other services are available for a nominal fee if you would like to have other vaccinations administered, your dog tested for heartworms (or prescribed heartworm preventive), your cat tested for FIV and Leukemia, or have your animal de-wormed. Information on prices for these services can be provided when your appointment is scheduled.
THANK YOU! By participating in our program, you are helping lower the number of homeless animals in our community, and you are giving shelter animals a higher chance of finding a home.
